Hills and Dales

In 1841 Sarah Ferrell expanded her mothers small garden originally planted in 1832. Sarah started planting boxwoods, native and exotic plants and opened her 35 acre garden to the public.

When she died in 1903 the gardens became overgrown and uncared for.
In 1911 Fuller Callaway bought the property he remembered walking through with Sarah as a child.
He built Hills and Dales on the site where Sarah Ferrell house had been and this became the Callaway family home.

Hill and Dales estate is open to the public. The house is interesting to walk through and the tour guides are very knowledgeable but the big draw are the many gardens that surround the house and terraces.

The gardens consist of the Tea Hedge Garden, Magnolia Walk, Boxwood Walk, Fountain Terrace and Lovers Lane to name a few. But the most impressive to me was the Church Garden.

The Church Garden was created by Sarah Ferrell. It contains a boxwood hedge shaped like a harp. Other beds represents the pews, organ and offering plate creating a natural  outdoor sanctuary.
The Ray Garden was originally meant for vegetables but was converted into a rose and ornamental flower  garden in 1950.

In 1916 a greenhouse was built on the property and was remodeled in 1949. One section contains orchids, begonias and blooming tropicals. The next part houses ferns. In the third section you’ll find snapdragons, carnations and other flowers meant for cutting. The greenskeeper was happy to answer any questions that we had.

The house celebrates it’s centennial this year. It’s worth the drive.

Taste of Marietta 2015

Once again we had a great time at the Taste of Marietta.  So many things to try! We started by walking the square to see who was there and what was offered.

There was a cooling station for kids and pets.

And lots of dogs that just had enough of the crowds.

There was an old police car that every one enjoyed seeing.
And of course, this is probably the only place you could have gotten deep fried bubble gum today.

Taste of Marietta is the place where you can go to taste the best that the area restaurants have to offer.

First we tried Angels Burritos. A chicken burrito that was okay. A chili dog that was okay. The  bowl of chicken and dumplings.... It was okay.

There was a tent for Crooked Tree Cafe,  Atlanta Fudge, Grand Champion BBQ, Sugarcakes Patisserie, Minas Grill, Fox Dogs, Vespucci's Italian Kitchen, Cool Hawaiian Shaved Ice, Kish Lounge, Chicken and the Egg and more.

Then there was SEED.  They served the most amazing White Corn Grit Fritters with a deep amber Jalapeño Jelly that was just the perfect complement! Served hot and cheesy. YUM

SEED KITCHEN & BAR is located at 1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 504, Marietta, Georgia
I've been there several times for lunch but never dinner.  I'll have to do that very soon.
Top Chef Doug Turbush will open his third restaurant in December 2015 called Drift.  A fish house and oyster bar in the Avenues at East Cobb. I can't wait.

The 2015 Awards of Distinction went to 540 Kitchen & Bar, Sugar Cakes, The Marietta Local, Tiny Bubbles Tea Bar, Big Shanty Smokehouse, Hottie Hawgs Barbeque, Taqueria Tsunami, Dave Poe’s BBQ and Seed Kitchen & Bar.
Another great day on the Marietta Square in Marietta, GA. A great place to live.

Spring on a Sunny Marietta Day

My friend Katie and I were walking home from a writers conference on Saturday when she spotted this dogwood.  It looked like it had two different color flowers on it. Some branches with white blossoms and the others pink! We couldn't believe our eyes because neither of us had ever seen a dogwood like that before.
On closer inspection Katie pointed out that there were two dogwoods planted and growing right next to each other. See the two trunks in the picture. Next time I plant a dogwood I think I'll get two different color dogwoods and do this same exact thing! Beautiful!

When we stopped at Katie's house she told me about the mold and mildew growing on some of the plants in her yard.  This is how I suggested she handle the problem caused by aphid growth.

Here is my blog post on bug control and mold. You may need to copy and paste.

Also, grow plants that aphids love - to lure them away from the plants you are trying to save. Some aphid favorites include nasturtiums, asters, mums, cosmos, hollyhocks, larkspur, tuberous begonias, verbena, dahlias, and zinnias. These can provide great organic control.

Happy Spring Everyone!
